In the era of e-mail and text messaging, the need for a letter can still be of immediate interest.
Expressing a desire in a letter is equivalent to implementing it. The letter is a wall behind which you can hide; it is the delay of important achievements and an almost faultless way of exercising influence at a distance. And it cannot be denied that it is a way of avoiding all responsibility. The letter makes it possible to stop the moment; it is not, however, only a tool of self-expression. It is at the same time a statement, an appeal, a persuasion, and an order; its effective force in this capacity should be seen from the proper perspective.
